Umrah Overview & Intention (Niyyah)

Umrah is a blessed visit to the Kaaba with four main parts: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i (between Safa & Marwah), and taḥallul (hair trimming/shaving). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Actions are only by intentions.” (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim) — so begin with a sincere heart solely for Allah.

Qur’an reminder: “And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah.” (Al-Baqarah 2:196)

Where to enter Ihram: From your Miqat. If flying, many airlines announce the Miqat time. Wear Ihram (men: two white unsewn cloths; women: normal modest dress without niqab/gloves), pray two rak’ah (optional), and make the intention.

Umrah Intention (Niyyah):
“Labbaika ‘Umrah” — O Allah, I respond to You for ‘Umrah.
Talbiyah (keep reciting until Tawaf begins):
Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am — You have no partner — here I am. Surely all praise, grace, and dominion are Yours; You have no partner.

Umrah: Step-by-Step

1) Enter Masjid al-Haram & Begin Tawaf

Enter with the right foot and say the masjid du’a. Proceed to the area of Tawaf (around the Kaaba). Men uncover the right shoulder (idtiba‘) during Tawaf. Face the Black Stone (do not push). If possible, point lightly and say “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar”. Do not cause harm.

  • Make 7 circuits counter-clockwise. Between the Yemeni Corner and Black Stone, many recite: “Rabbana atina fi-d-dunya hasanah…” (Qur’an 2:201).
  • After completing Tawaf, pray 2 rak‘ah behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, otherwise anywhere in the mosque (without blocking people).
Dua between Yemeni Corner & Black Stone (Qur’an 2:201):
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina ‘adhab an-nar.
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

2) Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah

Go to Safa, face the Kaaba, praise Allah, say takbeer and du’a. Walk to Marwah and return — this is one lap. Complete seven laps (Safa→Marwah is one; Marwah→Safa is the next). Men jog lightly in the marked green-lit area.

Qur’an reminder for Sa’i: “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah…” (Al-Baqarah 2:158)

3) Trim/Shave Hair (Taḥallul)

After Sa’i, men shave or trim the hair (shaving has extra reward). Women trim a fingertip-length. This completes Umrah and Ihram restrictions end.

Hajj Overview & Days

Hajj occurs in Dhul-Hijjah. A famous hadith states: “Take your rituals from me.” (Reported in Sahih Muslim) The key days are 8–13 Dhul-Hijjah. Common types: Hajj Tamattu‘ (Umrah first, then Hajj), Qiran, and Ifrad. Most first-timers choose Tamattu‘.

Core principle: Hajj is patience, safety, and kindness. Avoid harming others; follow local guidance; and keep dhikr frequent.

Hajj: Day-by-Day Steps (Tamattu‘)

8 Dhul-Hijjah (Yawm at-Tarwiyah)

  • Enter Ihram for Hajj from your lodging in Makkah (intention for Hajj).
  • Go to Mina, pray the daily prayers shortened.

9 Dhul-Hijjah (Day of ‘Arafah)

  • After Fajr in Mina, go to ‘Arafah. Stand in supplication until sunset (this is the most essential pillar of Hajj).
  • Recite talbiyah & make abundant du’a; face Qiblah; remember Allah.
  • After sunset, proceed to Muzdalifah. Pray Maghrib & ‘Isha (combined, shortened). Rest. Collect 49 or 70 pebbles for stoning.

10 Dhul-Hijjah (Yawm an-Naḥr)

  • From Muzdalifah, return to Mina. Perform Ramy (stoning) at Jamarat al-‘Aqabah (7 pebbles).
  • Offer sacrifice (if performing Tamattu‘/Qiran). Then taḥallul (partial release) by shaving/trimming hair.
  • Go to Makkah for Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’i (if due). Return to Mina for the night.

11–12 (and optionally 13) Dhul-Hijjah (Ayyam at-Tashriq)

  • Stay in Mina; perform Ramy at all three Jamarat each day (7 pebbles per pillar, in order: small, middle, then large).
  • Keep dhikr and supplication; maintain safety and calm pace.

Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada‘)

When leaving Makkah, perform a final Farewell Tawaf. This completes Hajj, in shaa’ Allah.
